Professor Andrew Rohl
Executive Director of iVECAndrew is a leading expert in the application of high performance computing and computer simulation technologies in materials chemistry with more than 100 published papers to his name. He has a D. Phil. from the University of Oxford and undertook post-doctoral studies at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, where he used supercomputers to solve important problems for the oil industry. Returning to Perth in 1996, he used supercomputing to solve problems of relevance to the mineral processing industry through the Nanochemistry Research Institute and the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy. In 2004, he became the ED of iVEC, where he has overseen an increase in iVEC’s supercomputing capacity by a factor of 250 and is looking forward to increasing it by at least another factor of 250 over the next four years through the new Pawsey supercomputing Centre.

Brad Coleman
Marketing and Communications ConsultantBrad has a BA with Honours in Visual Art (electronic art) and over 14 years of industry experience in design, corporate/community communications, branding and product marketing, working mainly for the mining sector, indigenous communities, education and the music industry. Brad is employed full time by Curtin University of Technology to support the iVEC Executive in expanding iVEC’s presence within the Western Australian industry, education and government sectors.

Grahame Cooper
Assistant Finance Manager with CSIROGrahame has a Diploma in Accounting and is a member of the National Institute of Accountants. Grahame has over 30 years accounting experience in commerce and has been with CSIRO over the past six years providing financial systems support to CSIRO, iVEC and other joint venture partners.

Mrs Wendy D'Arrigo
Personal Assistant to the Executive DirectorWendy has over 17 years experience providing administrative support in the context of research and development in the minerals and energy sector. Wendy is employed at 0.4 FTE by CSIRO Exploration and Mining to support the Office of the CEO and staff.

Brian Haines
Business ManagerBrian is an experienced information analyst and project manager, with particular expertise in information & communication technologies, information management and website content design and development.
In his academic life, he has held positions as lecturer in education and business management, senior lecturer in information Systems, Campus Manager, and Head of School (Information Technology). He has a BA (Hons) and BEd from the University of Western Australia and completed his MSc at the University of Oxford.
In recent years Brian has conducted an independent information management consultancy, working with a wide range of state and federal government departments, and private sector companies such as AlintaGas, Dialog IT, Woodside Energy, Chevron and Yilgarn Resources.
As Business Manager, Brian is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of iVEC’s key business and project documentation, including area action plans for iVEC’s Facilities and Programs, government reports and submissions and organisational infrastructure policy and procedures. He also acts as Executive Officer to the iVEC Board.

David Satterthwaite
Marketing and Communications ManagerDavid has worked as a journalist and editor for almost twenty years, covering a diverse range of publications including entertainment, environmental management, medical, science, telecommunications and digital media. He has extensive experience in both print and online media and his most recent role prior to iVEC was Editor of ScienceNetwork WA, Western Australia's online science news portal. David is employed by CSIRO and has been brought onboard to help define iVEC's media strategies for the development and launch of the Pawsey Centre.

Mr Andrew Beveridge
Industry & Government Uptake Program LeaderAndrew is a specialist in the area of programme delivery, innovation and technology commercialisation. After completing a degree in electrical and electronic engineering in the UK, he worked in the commercial sector, developing. his expertise in technology transfer and innovation. Upon moving to Australia in 1999Andrew worked on a number of public and private innovation programmes designed to help companies increase their competitiveness. In 2001, Andrew joined the University of Western Australia’s Office of Industry and Innovation, where he was responsible for commercialising Intellectual Property developed by researchers within the Engineering and Physical Sciences discipline. Moving to Murdoch University in April 2008, Andrew worked initially as the Business Development Manager for the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), later becoming Acting Director. Andrew’s most recent role prior to iVEC was in the role of Business Development Manager, Intellectual Property Commercialisation, at Curtin University.

Luke Edwards
Marine Data ManagerLuke holds a BSc (Env. Sci.) with first-class honours from UWA. He is employed by iVEC, WAMSI (Western Australian Marine Science Institution), IMOS - eMII (Integrated Marine Observing System - eMarine Information Infrastructure) and Curtin University as Marine Information Officer. He is currently working to create a WA Node of the Australian Ocean Data Network which aims to accelerate the availability marine data in Western Australia. Previous to this position he worked for WALIS Office at Landgate and in the university sector through the federal BlueNet project with a focus on geographic information systems and data and metadata management.

Dr Daniel Grimwood
Supercomputing Development and Applications SpecialistDaniel moved to the iVEC Supercomputing Technology and Applications Program in 2011. He worked in a similar position through iVEC in 2005-2007, co-funded by the APAC Computational Tools and Techniques Program. From 2007-2011 he was in the iVEC Industry and Government Uptake Program.
His expertise includes software optimisation and parallelisation on supercomputers, particularly in computational chemistry. He has helped clients in a diverse range of applications such as data sharing, simulation visualisation, collaboration tools and training. These clients have included students, academia, industry and government.
Daniel has a PhD with Distinction (Computational and Theoretical Chemistry) from the University of Western Australia.

Dr Jenni Harrison
eResearch Program LeaderJenni joins iVEC from NHS Education for Scotland (NES) where for the past three years she was leading the development of a number of cross-disciplinary collaborative projects, all which apply novel digital technology. Jenni is hoping to develop an eResearch network of excellence by promoting collaborative working, supported by iVEC. Consequently Jenni is looking forward to meeting researchers from throughout the research community across WA.

Dr Valerie Maxville
Education Program LeaderValerie Maxville is an experienced educator who is passionate about technology and it's potential. As Education Program Leader at iVEC, Valerie is responsible for training in supercomputing and eResearch along with internships and school outreach. She enjoys the challenge of communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences - breaking through the jargon to create a shared understanding. Valerie holds a PhD in Computer Science (Software Engineering) and an honours degree in Computer Science. As an industry volunteer, Valerie actively promotes careers in computing and local industry development. She is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Mathew Wyatt
Business Analyst, Australian National Data ServiceAfter completing a degree in Bioinformatics with first class honours in grid computing, Mathew went on to work as a Software Engineer for the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), James Cook University (JCU) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). During this time he worked on software solutions for the fields of marine biochemistry, x-ray crystallography, and the geosciences.
Now working in outreach for the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) in Western Australia based at iVEC, Mathew’s primary responsibilities are facilitating ANDS investment at the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University. In addition to this Mathew works with the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network’s (TERN) Auscover component and the Western Australian node of the Australian Ocean Data Network (WA-ODN) on their data delivery systems.

Professor Matthew Bellgard
Associate DirectorProfessor Matthew Bellgard is Murdoch University's Bioinformatics Chair and the Director of the Western Australian State Government Centre of Excellence, the Centre for Comparative Genomics. His scientific work has resulted in developments in the both the areas of pairwise sequence alignment and artificial intelligence, early detection of base composition differences in closely related bacterial species, and advances in the development of web-based integrated systems utilising high performance computing.
At Murdoch University Matthew has played a pivotal leadership role that has seen the progression of bioinformatics research evolve from a small research group to a thriving innovative R&D Centre. The Centre has established a strong track record in contract research and in delivering web-based informatics solutions to a diverse range of organisations including academics, Cooperative Research Centres, state government research facilities and industry.
Matthew's international experience includes a placement at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Genetics (Mishima, Japan).

Paul Bourke
Associate DirectorPaul Bourke is the associate director of the iVEC facility at the University of Western Australia. His research interests include visualisation, computer graphics, geometric algortihms, and digital image processing. During his career he has worked in positions where he concentrated on architectural, brain/medical, and astronomy visualisation. Of particular interest are engaging and immersive display technologies and how they may be used to support scientific visualisation, employed for public outreach and education, and used to create novel exhibits for museums and other public spaces.

Akos Bruz
Senior Video ProducerAkos has been producing training and instructional movies in Australia for over 16 years. His portfolio includes a wide range of clients from industrial giants such as Diamond Offshore, Sedco Forex and Hammersley Iron through mid- and small-sized businesses like Bristow Helicopters, Apache Helicopters, Boral and Kanowna Belle to government agencies like Central TAFE and now The University of Western Australia. His role with iVEC is to produce movies that raise awareness of science in both future students of science as well as the general public.

Darran Carey
iVEC Grid Systems AdministratorDarran has an Associate Diploma in Applied Science and has over ten years of experience in systems administration. Darran is currently the Western Australian Grid Administrator for the APAC Grid and is responsible for ensuring that the gridconnections into Western Australia are available and that grid jobs arriving into iVEC arrive at their designated resource.

Dr Damien Carter
iVEC/Curtin University Early Career Research FellowDamien currently has a dual role of encouraging the update of grid computing services and the use of HPC facilities within the theoretical chemistry community, coupled with researching problems in materials chemistry area using high-level theoretical calculations. Damien completed his PhD (Chemistry) at Curtin University in 2005 and then spent 4 years as a post-doctoral researcher in the Condensed Matter Theory group and the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology at the University of Sydney, before joining iVEC in 2009.

Mr Ashley Chew
System AdministratorAshley has a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from Curtin University and has recently come from Computer Science and Software Engineering at UWA, with over 10 years of system administration across multiple OS Platforms.
Has an active interest in systems interoperability and a fondness for linux-based systems.
He served as the Western Australia technical operations for “ACM international Collegiate Programming Contest” from 2004 to 2011.
He is a System Administrator for the iVEC@UWA Facility.

Mark Favas
Associate Director, Network Operations ManagerMark Favas from CSIRO IM&T e-Science has been 100% committed to iVEC by CSIRO to provide high-level network and scientific support. With an extensive networking and Unix background, and years of experience as a researcher, Mark designs and maintains the iVEC network and provides system support on complex Unix issues. With a broad interest in scientific computing and a strong understanding of policy, Mark is able to advise researchers on how best to manage their data to best practice and to meet regulatory requirements.

Dr Sean Fleming
Grid Support OfficerSean has been involved in molecular modelling research and software development for nearly 10 years. He holds a PhD in Molecular Modelling and a BSc(Hons) in Physics. He is currently involved in developing and supporting a wide range of client software aimed at facilitating the use of the Australian Grid for research and collaboration purposes.

Khanh Ly
Computer Support OfficerKhanh Ly is the Computer Support Officer at iVEC@UWA, where he maintains and supports the servers and networks of iVEC@UWA and its High Performance Computing resources. Khanh is also responsible for operating the Access Grid and EVO at iVEC@UWA. He came to iVEC@UWA in 2009 from Telstra, Melbourne. Khanh has a Master’s Degree in Network and Systems from Swinburne University of Technology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering from The University of Western Australia. His major interests include video conferencing, video streaming and encoding, IP networking technologies and HPC.

Tony Mulry
Pawsey Centre Project ManagerTony has over 30 years industry project/program management experience and has successfully delivered large complex projects in industry verticals such as R&D, IT&T, Aviation, Construction and Change Management/Business Transformation. During this period he has received a number of industry awards and successfully established and developed a project management consultancy company that has delivered PM professional services to large and complex projects internationally. He is a certified, professionally accredited project manager and member of the Australian Institute of Project Management.

Paul Newman
Supercomputing SpecialistPaul Newman has extensive experience in systems administration, operating system and hardware support, user support and systems installation. He has good analytical skills, which enable him to quickly identify problems and implement effective solutions.
Paul has a detailed knowledge of systems and technologies and has assisted clients in implementing customised solutions to their requirements.He has provided systems and applications support to users in the mining and petroleum industries. Duties included backup and archival of customer data and writing programs to read and write data in custom formats.
He installed and managed a large network of UNIX workstations used for mine planning, and was responsibly for the successful completion of the project.
Paul's current interests are Perl and Python programming and image manipulation with GIMP.
Before joining iVEC, Paul worked as a Systems Support Engineer at SGI; as a systems administrator at BHP Engineering and BHP Iron Ore's Newman mine site; as a Post Sales Support Engineer at Sun Microsystems.

System AdministratorMark is the Systems Administrator of the CCG and he supports the Senior Systems Administrator with the maintenance of the iVEC@Murdoch Facility.

Brad Power
Visualisation ConsultantMr Brad Power holds a Computer Scientist degree from Curtin University, and has experience in a wide range of realtime interactive systems and visualisation. His current role is at the Centre for Comparative Genomics at Murdoch University, where he helps develop software targeted at scientists dealing with large data set processing as well as supporting the visualisation initiatives at iVEC@murdoch.

Guy Robinson
Pawsey Centre Systems ArchitectOver the past twenty years Guy has migrated from using supercomputing as a key tool in his research activity to leading the design, operation and support activities involved in production supercomputing centres. He has acted as a liaison between computers and users at the Arctic Region Supercomputing Centre, Fairbanks, Alaska, for the UKMO, based at the Earth Simulator, and as part of the CSE support for HECToR in the UK, as well as working for several supercomputer vendors designing systems for scientists to use. Guy recently started work as the Systems Architect at the Pawsey Centre, with responsibilities for the design of the Petascale systems as part of the SKA pathfinder activity. A key focus of all his work has been the use of computers to solve complex problems, creating a productive environment, and providing support to maintain users at the leading edge as technologies advance.

System AdministratorDavid Schibeci has a BSc with double majors in Computer Science and Mathematics with Honours from Murdoch University. He is a system administrator with the iVEC Informatics Facility.

Dr Andrew Squelch
R&D Senior ConsultantDr Andrew Squelch, R&D Senior Consultant, has over 20 years experience in visualisation and numerical modelling in the context of rock mechanics, mining technologies and virtual reality-based training. He has a PhD from the University of Nottingham. Andrew is a full-time employee of Curtin University of Technology and devotes half his time to iVEC and the other half to the Centre for High Definition Geophysics. Within iVEC, Andrew is responsible for the visualisation facilities at the ARRC Node. He has spent the last four years as an iVEC staff member involved in industry focused applied research and development and outreach activities, data visualisation research, training simulator research and development, and co-supervision of student projects.
