Collaborating Organisation Overview

The Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) is a collaborative venture of sixteen core parties, including Commonwealth and Western Australian State Government research organisations, private industry and four Western Australian universities working together to create a world-leading marine research capability.

Project Overview

WAMSI has a large quantity of valuable marine research data which exists in various formats and locations from many researchers. WAMSI set about ensuring this data was not lost for future generations by creating a legacy that made it easily discoverable and accessible to all. This audience includes national marine data access initiatives such as the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN).

Project Challenge

WAMSI researchers are producing a large and diverse amount of marine research data that is in a wide range of formats. It needs to be made available to a wide range of audiences and professionals who have various technical abilities.

iVEC’s Solution

WAMSI’s challenges were solved through the use of iVEC’s Petabyte Data Store and computer infrastructure to store and manage large amounts of marine scientific data through the Internet.

Environmental Outcome

The easy discovery and delivery of marine research data will enable decision makers and other marine researchers to underpin the conservation and sustainable management of Western Australia’s marine environment and resources.
