iVEC enters SC13 Student Cluster Competition

iVEC is pleased to announce that its team has been successfully accepted into the Student Cluster Competition at SC13.

SC13, taking place in Denver, Colorado, in November, is the pre-eminent event in the high performance computing (HPC) world. Attendees from all around the globe will gather to exchange ideas and information about supercomputing, with this year’s event focusing on the increasing integration of HPC into modern life

The Student Cluster Competition is an annual highlight of the convention, a way to showcase the expertise of the next generation of the HPC community. Student teams from around the world engage in a non-stop 48 hour challenge to design and build a supercomputing cluster from commercially available components and demonstrate the greatest sustained performance across a series of applications.

2013 is the first year in which iVEC has put a team forwards to take part in the Student Cluster Competition, and the first time an Australian student team has been accepted. With generous supporters such as Rio Tinto, SGI and Allinea providing hardware, software licensing and travel fees, a team of undergraduate students from across iVEC partner institutions have been granted their chance to demonstrate their exceptional skills to the world.

“The Student Cluster Competition is the best way for these students to put their skills to the test in a fun, challenging and career-relevant environment,” said Dr Rebecca Hartman-Baker, iVEC Supercomputing Development and Applications Specialist and mentor for the SC13 team.

“It’s been great to see how enthusiastic and helpful our sponsors like Rio Tinto, SGI and Allinea have been, and the students have received so much support from their home universities.

“I’m confident that we can proudly compete with the best in the world, and I’d be thrilled to bring the SC13 trophy back to Perth with us in November.”
