The iVEC network was expanded in 2005 and now all members are connected via a high-speed, dedicated fibre-optic network.  This network provides high bandwidth for data intensive applications as well as low latency which can be critical for certain applications such as access grid.

The iVEC network is organised in a star topology with the hub located at the ARRC facility. Currently, the iVEC@UWA and iVEC@Murdoch Facilities and Curtin University are connected at 10 Gbps whilst Edith Cowan University is connected at 1 Gbps.  The network also links the nodes to AARNet at 10 Gbps and subsequently the eastern coast of Australia and overseas.

The networking hardware (switches and routers) was provided by Cisco Systems. The fibre infrastructure can easily take advantage of emerging technologies such as wave division multiplexing and higher speeds.
